I was asked an interesting question by a student today, so I thought I would put this into a blog post for those who also wondered what the difference between Roman Chamomile and German Chamomile was.
Whilst they have similar properties and are both powerful oils in their own rights, there are some differences:
Colour
Roman Chamomile - Typically pale yellow to clear in colour
German Chamomile - Often a deep blue colour
Aroma
Roman Chamomile - Roman is a sweet, apple-like, yet floral aroma
German Chamomile - German is more herby & herbaceous with a slight sweetness
Chemical constituents
Roman Chamomile - Contains Esters which are calming, and anti-spasmodic
German Chamomile - Contains Chamazulene & Bisabolol which are anti-inflammatory and contain healing properties
Uses
Roman Chamomile - Best for stress, mild skin conditions and for relaxation
German Chamomile - Best for inflammation, pain relief and more sever skin conditions
Sensitivity
Roman Chamomile - Gentle and soothing, better for children and elderly clients
German Chamomile - Stronger and more potent
Which one to choose?
Roman Chamomile - If you want relaxation, a calmer mind, and have sensitive skin, then Roman is for you
German Chamomile - If you are looking for anti-inflammatory, pain relief, bruising or have more complex skin conditions, then German is for you
Thank you for reading
